Housing through a Dutch employment agency: must you leave when work stops?

Losing an agency assignment does not by itself settle when you must leave accommodation arranged through work. Examine the employment agreement, housing agreement, applicable collective agreement and the precise demand for departure separately.

Editorial review: Arslan Advocaten. Updated 24 October 2026.

Identify the employer and the housing provider

The employment agency, the owner and the company collecting rent may be different entities. Record who signed each agreement and who receives payment. A statement that employment has ended does not automatically establish the legal ending of a separate tenancy. Registration at the address and the label on the accommodation are not conclusive by themselves.

Separate work and housing documents

The Good Landlordship rules require particular safeguards for housing labour migrants, including separation of employment and tenancy agreements where applicable. Keep both sets of terms and information supplied in a language you understand. Do not assume a document is merely an employment condition because the same organisation arranged the job and the bed.

No universal four-week rule or automatic service tenancy

A collective agreement or specific housing arrangement may provide a transition period, but not every worker has the same four-week entitlement. Equally, agency housing is not automatically a service tenancy that ends with employment. The housing’s legal classification, actual use and applicable terms need assessment. Ask which clause and legal basis support the proposed date.

Wage deductions and certification

A deduction for housing from wages needs its own legal assessment, including minimum-wage safeguards, authorisation and conditions that apply to the arrangement. An SNF certificate concerns housing standards and does not decide every tenancy right or validate every deduction. Keep payslips, payment authorisations, rent accounts and the certification information.

If you are told to leave immediately

Save the message, contract and date of receipt. Ask in writing whether the demand ends the job, the housing or both, and request its legal basis. Tell your adviser about illness, family members, a threatened lock change and the time remaining. A complaint to a certification body is not a substitute for urgent legal protection. Settle the final rent, service charges and deposit as separate financial items.

Documents to collect

  • Employment and housing agreements
  • Applicable collective terms and housing rules
  • Departure message and next deadline
  • Payslips, deductions and rent transfers
  • Deposit proof, inspection and certification records

Frequently asked questions

Does ending an assignment end my tenancy?

Not automatically. Employment, housing and the legal basis for departure require separate assessment.

Do I always have four weeks to move?

No universal answer applies. Check the collective agreement, arrangement and legal classification.

Does SNF certification prove the agency can evict me?

No. Certification does not determine every contractual or tenancy right.

Discuss the right next step

Send the complete agreement, relevant correspondence and the next deadline. We first assess the legal question, evidence and appropriate route. The first consultation is free and without obligation. Eligible individuals may qualify for subsidised legal aid; a personal contribution or other costs can remain. Where private fees apply, we agree the scope and expected costs before further work. A contact request does not itself preserve a statutory or court deadline.
