Are you registered in the External Reference Register (EVR) for eight years and would you like to have that period shortened? Ask for the individual reasons for that period. The maximum duration is not automatically the appropriate duration for every case. Even if the ground for registration is accepted, the proportionality of the registration continuing can be assessed separately.

The ground for registration and its duration are separate questions
You can dispute that there is sufficient evidence for a registration. In addition, you can argue that the chosen duration is disproportionate. Make clear whether you are asking for removal because the registration is unjustified, for a shorter period on the basis of the balancing of interests, or for both on separate grounds.
The applicable PIFI 2026 (the Dutch financial institutions’ incident warning protocol) sets conditions for registration and retention periods. For an older registration, the version that applied at the time must also be taken into account. Request the start date, end date and reasoning for each register.
Which circumstances count?
The nature and seriousness of the conduct, your involvement, the scale, any repetition and your personal circumstances may be relevant. The passage of time and demonstrable changes can also support a request. None of these circumstances guarantees an outcome on its own.
Substantiate the consequences in concrete terms. A refusal of necessary insurance, a demonstrable obstacle to obtaining financing or consequences for your work all require evidence. Merely saying that a registration is unpleasant does little to clarify the individual balancing exercise.
Requesting a reassessment
Send a targeted request to the institution that made the registration. State which earlier assessment you are disputing and which new circumstances have arisen since that decision. Ask for a reassessment of whether the remaining duration is necessary.
A request that repeats the same arguments without new substantiation does not automatically have a better chance. Therefore, first gather the registration letter, earlier decisions, evidence of the consequences and relevant developments. Keep your account factual and consistent.
Check other registers as well
Shortening an EVR entry does not automatically mean that every internal registration or ordinary claims record will be removed. Ask which data will remain in the incident register, the Internal Reference Register (IVR), the events administration or other systems, and why.
A decision must make clear which measure is being adjusted and from what date. If necessary, have it confirmed to which recipients the change will be passed on. This prevents you from thinking that you have been removed from all systems when only one registration has been changed.

Does an EVR registration always have to last eight years?
No. The chosen duration requires an individual assessment within the applicable framework.
Can I ask for a shorter period without admitting fraud?
You can put forward several legal grounds. State clearly that an alternative request for a shorter period is not intended as an admission of the facts.
Is wanting to take out a mortgage sufficient?
A concrete and substantiated interest may be relevant, but it does not automatically take precedence over all other interests.
