How do I get to the office?
Ask for current directions and parking information when you make your appointment, via the contact page or on 010 311 5500.
Whether you come by car or by public transport, the office will give you up-to-date route and parking information. This information is deliberately not published on this page, because stop and parking rate details change and outdated directions would only mislead you.
Can I visit without an appointment?
It is best to make an appointment first: call 010 311 5500 or use the contact page, and a time will be scheduled for you.
There is a practical reason for this. During the day the lawyers are regularly in court, with a client or in meetings. If you walk in unannounced, you will often find nobody who can discuss your case in substance, and a five-minute conversation at the front desk rarely helps you. With an appointment, you know that time has been set aside for you and that the person you meet has been able to prepare for your case.
The office is open Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 17:30. Within those hours you can call, even just to check whether your issue is something for a lawyer. Outside those hours you can use the contact form; your message will normally be dealt with on the next working day.
Which areas of law does the office in Rotterdam handle?
In Rotterdam, all areas of law of the firm are handled: personal injury, employment law, tenancy law, family law, criminal law and business law. Below is a short description of each area, with a link to the page where it is explained in more detail.
- Personal injury. You have been injured through someone else’s actions: in a road accident, an accident at work, a medical error or a fall. The lawyer holds the liable party to account and recovers your loss, both your financial loss and compensation for pain and suffering (smartengeld). For information specific to this city, see our page for a personal injury lawyer in Rotterdam.
- Employment law. The relationship between employer and employee: dismissal, a settlement agreement, a conflict at work, unpaid wages or long-term illness. Both employees and employers can contact the firm. Short time limits often apply.
- Tenancy law. Your home or business premises: termination of the lease, defects and overdue maintenance, rent increases, nuisance or a threatened eviction. Landlords can also be assisted.
- Family law. Divorce, maintenance, the division of joint property, parental authority and contact arrangements with children. Cases in which the legal and the personal are closely intertwined.
- Criminal law. Assistance if you are a suspect: at a police interview, an arrest, a summons or a hearing. Victims can also be assisted in criminal proceedings.
- Business law. The legal side of running a business: contracts, partnerships, debt collection and disputes with suppliers or customers.
Arslan Advocaten also has information in English on insurance law and administrative law.
Not sure which area of law your issue falls under? You do not need to know. Describe what has happened; the firm will determine who handles your case.
You can see who works at Arslan Advocaten, and in which role, on the team page.
What does a first meeting cost?
What a first meeting costs depends on your case and on how it is funded; ask about this before the meeting via 010 311 5500 or the contact page, so that you know in advance.
In practice there are several routes, and which one applies to you depends on the type of case and your situation:
- Subsidised legal aid. If your income is below the threshold used by the Legal Aid Board (Raad voor Rechtsbijstand), legal aid can be applied for. You then pay a personal contribution instead of the full hourly rate.
- Legal expenses insurance. If you have legal expenses insurance, in many cases you have the right to choose your own lawyer. Mention this at the first contact so that it can be taken into account.
- Hourly rate or another arrangement. In cases that do not fall under one of the routes above, the rate and the approximate costs you can expect are agreed in advance.
- The liable party bears the costs. In personal injury cases where liability has been established, the reasonable costs of legal assistance in principle count as recoverable loss (Article 6:96(2) of the Dutch Civil Code) and are then usually paid by the liable party’s insurer; if liability has not been established, this does not happen automatically. What applies in your case will be explained at the first meeting.
In all cases, you will hear before the meeting where you stand. So ask about it explicitly when you call: it is a normal question and it will be answered.
What should I bring to a first appointment?
Bring your proof of identity and all papers relating to your case: how complete your documents are largely determines how concrete the first meeting can be.
| Bring | Why |
|---|---|
| Valid proof of identity | so that the lawyer can establish your identity |
| All letters and emails about the matter | they show what happened and who said what |
| Contracts and agreements | employment contract, tenancy agreement, settlement agreement |
| Official documents | summons, decision, ruling, letter holding someone liable, with the date on it |
| Correspondence with an insurer | in personal injury and liability cases, including medical documents you already have |
| Your legal expenses insurance policy | to determine whether it covers the costs |
| A short timeline | what happened when, in your own words |
A short timeline is the most underestimated item. Half a page with dates and events in order saves a lot of time in the first meeting, and dates matter because time limits start to run from a specific day.
Do you not have everything? Come anyway. Missing documents can be added later; postponing an appointment because one document is missing usually costs you more than it gains, especially if a time limit is running.
In which languages can I be helped?
At Arslan Advocaten you can be helped in Dutch, Turkish, Polish and English. You do not need to bring a family member or acquaintance to translate.
In legal matters, nuance counts: what exactly was said, what exactly was agreed, what you did and did not sign. If you can tell your story in your own language, you tell it more completely, and those details often determine the outcome.
When you make the appointment, let us know which language you would like the meeting to be held in, so that this can be taken into account in the planning.
How quickly can I be seen?
How quickly you can be seen depends on the urgency of your case; if a time limit is running, call 010 311 5500 straight away and mention that time limit immediately.
The reason to call rather than email is simple: in many cases a time limit is running, and a missed time limit can rarely be repaired. Think of the cooling-off period for a settlement agreement, the time limit for lodging an objection or appeal, a hearing date that has already been set or an announced eviction. If you do not mention it, your request is treated like any other request; if you do, it can be taken into account in the planning.
If no time limit is running, feel free to use the contact form. Briefly describe what is going on and what you want to achieve; that speeds up the response.
Can I also go to another office?
Yes. Arslan Advocaten also has offices in The Hague (Paletplein 80 and Goeverneurlaan 445), Amsterdam, Utrecht, Tilburg and Eindhoven.
You are not tied to the office closest to where you live. If you live in Rotterdam and work in The Hague, or the other way round, you can ask whether the meeting can take place at the other location. Call 010 311 5500 or use the contact page; the addresses and opening hours of the other offices are listed there.
Also practical: much of what follows after the first meeting is done by telephone and email. The distance to the office usually matters less for the course of a case than people expect beforehand.
